A: My early fascination with cars was intense, almost an addiction, and definitely an expensive hobby. It led to things like speeding tickets and sky-high insurance premiums, which made me decide to completely distance myself from it for a while. I actually stopped driving altogether and even sold my car to break away from that cycle.

It wasn’t until I was around 30, facing layoffs at the company I was working for, that I had a profound realization. I had to seriously evaluate what I wanted to dedicate the next 35 years of my life to. That pivotal moment brought me back to cars, but with a different perspective. Now, I experience that same incredible sense of fulfillment, that exhilarating rush from working on and being surrounded by high-performance vehicles, but without the financial burden or personal risk of my younger days. It’s truly the best of both worlds, allowing me to channel my passion professionally and responsibly.

Q: Your job seems like an ideal fit. What aspects do you find most rewarding?

A: The most rewarding part, hands down, is the opportunity to work with — or rather, “play with” — incredibly cool cars. My focus is primarily on Porsches, encompassing a wide spectrum of tasks. This ranges from routine maintenance and complex repairs to high-performance tuning, which often involves swapping out wheels, exhaust systems, suspension components, and even full restorations. This variety ensures that no two days are ever the same, keeping the work fresh and engaging.

My absolute favorite parts are the hands-on, technical challenges. Problem-solving is incredibly rewarding; there’s a unique satisfaction in diagnosing an issue and implementing a precise solution. It’s a field where I’m constantly learning. Even after 11 years, I still feel like there’s an immense amount more to discover and master, which keeps me motivated and prevents complacency. The automotive world is always evolving, and so am I.

I don’t attend these events as a spectator or for press coverage; I’m there to work. This often means putting in incredibly long days filled with intense physical labor. It’s far from the effortless glamour that might be perceived through a screen, but the experience of being an integral part of such high-stakes events is genuinely amazing.

In truth, my job is something I once only dreamed of. I am genuinely awestruck by the opportunities it presents. Capturing and sharing those moments that I find beautiful, thrilling, and wonderful is both an immense honor and a vital creative outlet for me. A: Some challenges are, of course, physically obvious, particularly during demanding periods like race days. Managing menstrual cycles in an environment that often lacks convenient and private facilities – with the nearest portable restroom sometimes half a mile away – can certainly add a layer of discomfort and inconvenience. It’s a practical aspect of working in environments not typically designed with women in mind.

Beyond these practical considerations, I feel incredibly fortunate to live in a time and place where a woman being a mechanic is increasingly viewed as normal. While there’s still an initial element of surprise when people learn about my profession, the reactions are overwhelmingly positive. I haven’t experienced any overt hostility or prejudice. Instead, people are generally impressed and supportive, which is a wonderful shift from previous generations. This positive environment allows me to focus on my work and continuously improve my skills, rather than constantly battling outdated stereotypes.

Q: Could you share some of your most memorable projects or experiences?

A: I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have countless memorable experiences throughout my career, but my very first restoration project stands out as one of the greatest. Porsche Canada launched its inaugural restoration competition, and I was given the incredible opportunity to restore a 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo for the dealership. We were competing against other Porsche dealerships from across the country, making it a high-stakes and deeply personal challenge.

Even though our team ultimately placed sixth out of twelve, the entire experience was absolutely amazing. This project was more than just a job; it was something I poured my heart and soul into, meticulously focusing on every single aspect of the restoration. The depth of my involvement and the passion I invested were immense. The culmination of this incredible journey came at the awards ceremony, held at the historic Tremblant racetrack in Quebec. There, I had the unforgettable honor of taking the then-president of Porsche Canada for a thrilling lap around the track in the very car I had painstakingly rebuilt. It was a truly crazy, exhilarating, and deeply personal experience that solidified my love for restoration and the profound connection one can build with a machine.

Q: How do you anticipate electric cars will impact or change your profession?

A: Electric vehicles (EVs) are undeniably going to bring significant changes to our profession, transforming many aspects of automotive repair and maintenance. However, for the time being, I’ve made a conscious decision not to pursue extensive further training specifically in the electrical vehicle field. My reasoning is that the technology is still rapidly evolving and remains somewhat in flux. There’s a constant stream of new developments, battery chemistries, and charging infrastructures emerging, making it a dynamic but also somewhat unstable area to specialize in right now.

For the immediate future, I want to concentrate my efforts and deep expertise on the work I truly enjoy and where my passion lies—classic and performance internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, particularly air-cooled Porsches. There’s a timeless appeal and intricate mechanical beauty in these machines that I find immensely fulfilling to work on.

Ultimately, I’m not entirely convinced that electric cars are the definitive long-term solution to our transportation challenges. In fact, simply having more cars, regardless of their propulsion type, might not be the answer at all. Electric cars, while a step forward in some aspects, often feel like a Band-Aid solution for immediate environmental concerns. We still need to critically address and find sustainable answers for crucial aspects such as the entire lifecycle of batteries—from their manufacturing and resource extraction to their eventual disposal and recycling. Furthermore, the overall environmental impact of producing and powering these vehicles, including the source of electricity and the infrastructure required, needs a much more holistic and sustainable approach. It’s a complex issue with many layers that require thoughtful consideration beyond the immediate benefits.

Q: What is your key advice for young women who are considering entering the trades?

A: My most crucial advice for young women aspiring to enter the trades, or any challenging field for that matter, is to persevere and never be afraid to wholeheartedly follow your dreams. The journey might be tough, but your passion will be your greatest fuel. However, it’s equally important to understand that perseverance doesn’t mean enduring an unhealthy or unsupportive environment indefinitely. If you find yourself in a workplace that doesn’t feel right, that doesn’t respect you, or where you simply don’t thrive, it’s absolutely okay to leave. You do not have to stay.

Your well-being and growth are paramount. It’s not a failure to seek out a better environment; it’s a smart and courageous step towards achieving your full potential. The key is to never stop chasing your dreams, even if that means finding a different path or a new setting to pursue them. The world is vast, and there are many places where your talent and dedication will be recognized and celebrated. Find that place, and keep pushing forward with unwavering determination.

Q: What kind of car do you personally drive?

A: You might find this amusing, but I don’t drive anything exciting at all! My friends at work often tease me about it, saying things like, “We know you’re passionate about fast cars and you have the skills to ‘soup up’ any vehicle. Why on earth do you drive what looks like an accountant’s rental car?” And honestly, I don’t have a profound answer. For me, it simply serves its purpose: getting me from point A to point B efficiently.

That “hot blood” craving for speed and performance, like I had when I was 18, simply isn’t there anymore for my personal vehicle. I’m perfectly content. My professional life is filled with working on incredible, high-performance machines, and that fulfills that part of me entirely. So, I drive an automatic 2013 Volkswagen Passat. It’s incredibly roomy, practical, and I genuinely love it for its comfort and reliability. However, if you were to ask me about my dream car, without a doubt, I would say a Porsche 911. There are so many iconic models within the 911 lineage, and I admire every single one of them.

Q: What are your go-to, pro-specific tools that you can’t work without?

A: My everyday must-have tools are quite straightforward and have become indispensable, especially given the types of cars I predominantly work on. Due to the intricate designs and specific fasteners often found in Porsches, I always have my reliable Phillips-head screwdriver close at hand. This is essential for various interior and exterior components.

Another absolute staple is a 1/4-inch bit ratchet set. Its versatility and compact size are crucial for accessing tight spaces and dealing with delicate fasteners common in high-performance vehicles. For more robust tasks, a 3/8-inch impact driver is invaluable for efficiently removing and installing bolts with precision and power. Illumination is key for detailed work, so a powerful flashlight is always within reach to ensure I have a clear view of every component. Finally, my noise-canceling ear buds are critical for protecting my hearing in a noisy workshop environment while allowing me to focus.
