Living with Natural Wood Flooring: Care, Style, and Tips

When I choose new pieces for the home I always favour natural materials, and timber flooring has been my constant preference for years. We installed oak floors in our current house and I had similar floors in my previous home. Real wood underfoot feels warm and tactile in a way that synthetic finishes rarely do.

Recently we sanded and refinished the living room floorboards. The original varnish had yellowed slightly over time, and we wanted a paler, fresher finish. Since the boards are solid oak and in good condition, refinishing felt far preferable to replacing them. The sanding process was messy and disruptive, though, so it’s not a DIY job I’d rush to repeat.

When we do move I’m already dreaming of parquet flooring. Parquet brings so much character and pattern to a space; I’ve saved inspirational images on Pinterest and often picture it in light-filled period homes and chic city apartments. Whitened Oak combines flaxen and ashen shades to create a pale, contemporary floor. Often used in classic herringbone layouts, this finish reads smooth and subtly rustic at the same time. It suits minimalist and coastal schemes as well as interiors that favour a soft, neutral foundation.

Goodrich Feather Oak

Feather Oak caught my eye for its soft, muted grey tone with delicate white grain. On the website it seemed darker than expected, but the sample box revealed a calm, matt finish and subtle colouring that felt just right. It’s an understated choice that brings a refined, contemporary calm to a room.

Handling and assembling the samples was straightforward, and the quality felt excellent. The boards fit together precisely and the finishes are consistent, which suggests the collection would be straightforward for a professional fitter to install to a high standard.
