When she was just ten years old, Greta Bajrami and her family embarked on a life-altering journey, leaving their war-torn home in Albania for the promise of a new beginning in Massachusetts. For Greta’s mother, this profound relocation meant transitioning from a respected medical doctor to working tirelessly in a donut shop. Yet, without a moment’s hesitation, she embraced the opportunity to provide her daughter with the chance to grow up in America, a decision that profoundly shaped Greta’s future.
Today, Greta Bajrami is not merely making the most of that opportunity; she is redefining what’s possible within the American dream, particularly in an industry often seen as traditional and male-dominated.
At 32, she stands as the dynamic CEO of Golden Group Roofing, a thriving enterprise that operates out of two busy offices and has recently undergone significant expansion into specialized areas like siding solutions and cutting-edge solar installations. Bajrami is also a recognized innovator, having developed the industry’s first online roofing cost calculator, a tool that has empowered countless homeowners with transparency and convenience. Her entrepreneurial spirit extends beyond her core business with the creation of Rootless, an innovative app designed to connect individuals with career paths they might never have considered, broadening horizons and opening doors. Her remarkable achievements did not go unnoticed, culminating in her prestigious recognition as the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in 2023, a testament to her vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence.
“I grew up as an immigrant, arriving with absolutely no English, yet I find myself falling more and more in love with the American dream every single day,” she shares with palpable enthusiasm. “My mom instilled in me the belief that you can achieve anything if you face it with your head held high. Witnessing her rebuild her entire career from scratch, despite the immense challenges, taught me an invaluable lesson: that I too was capable of achieving great things.” Her mother’s resilience became Greta’s blueprint for success, inspiring her to tackle formidable obstacles and carve out her own unique path.
We recently had the privilege of catching up with Greta Bajrami, who openly shared insights into her initial, challenging days as a ‘newbie roofer,’ the hurdles she overcame, and her forward-thinking perspectives on breaking free from conventional expectations, especially regarding traditional siding solutions.
Q: How did you end up choosing roofing as a career? It’s not a typical path for many, especially women.
A: It’s quite an unconventional story, really. During an entrepreneurship class in college, I developed a detailed business plan and an operational strategy for a theoretical company. I poured my heart into it, and I absolutely loved the process of creation and problem-solving, even though it was confined to paper. It ignited a spark within me for the world of business. That very summer, I stumbled upon a Craigslist ad that caught my eye – it was for a roofing company foreman position. The advertised pay was $300 a day. My mind immediately went to the numbers; I started calculating 365 days multiplied by $300, and the sum was incredibly compelling. It represented a significant financial opportunity that I couldn’t ignore. So, I applied for the job. To be honest, I wasn’t necessarily passionate about becoming a roofer at that initial stage. My driving force was recognizing that I possessed a strong skill set for managing people and overseeing job sites, skills I felt were highly transferable. I saw the roofing industry as a practical avenue to apply my innate leadership abilities and build a tangible career, even if the industry itself wasn’t my first romanticized choice.
Q: Did you have any background in the trades or construction before taking on that foreman role?
A: Absolutely none whatsoever, and my first day on site was a truly humbling, almost comically bad, experience. I stepped onto the job site with zero practical knowledge, navigating a world that was entirely foreign to me. At one point, the crew called for an ice-and-water shield membrane, which, as I quickly learned, is a crucial leak barrier used in roofing systems to protect against moisture intrusion. In my complete inexperience, I literally thought they wanted actual ice and water – like, frozen water and liquid water. So, with all the best intentions, I headed straight to CVS to buy them ice and bottled water! It was an embarrassing moment, a stark reminder of how much I had to learn, and a clear indication that I was a complete novice in a highly specialized field. That day served as a very blunt, but ultimately valuable, introduction to the realities of the construction industry and the steep learning curve I faced.
Q: How did you manage to fit into such a demanding, and often male-dominated, environment?
A: Initially, the crew was quite gentle and perhaps a bit bemused by my presence, which I appreciated. However, that phase wore out very quickly. Construction is an incredibly high-pressure, fast-moving, and physically demanding job where there’s little room for error or hesitation. You have to pull your weight, and then some. I realized almost immediately that if I wanted to succeed, I couldn’t just stand on the sidelines; I had to step it up significantly. This meant rolling up my sleeves and taking on every task, no matter how physically challenging. I quickly learned to carry the heavy bundles of shingles, often weighing 80 pounds or more, and mastering how to drive the large trucks and navigate them through job sites. It was a baptism by fire, but it taught me a profound lesson about this industry: you will get a seat at the table, but you also absolutely have to show up, prove your capability, and earn your place through hard work and determination. This period of intense learning and proving myself forged me into the strong, resilient leader I am today, capable of facing any challenge head-on.
Q: You transitioned from being a foreman to owning your own business. Can you tell us about that journey?

A: The three years I spent as a foreman were incredibly painful and challenging, both physically and emotionally. There were countless moments of intense self-doubt, leading to many tears and a deep sense of isolation. This was amplified by the rise of social media, where I would see my friends out in Boston, enjoying drinks and a vibrant social life, while I was on a dusty job site, with dirty fingernails, desperately needing a shower, and often eating takeout from a gas station. It was a stark contrast that often made me question my choices. I had so many moments when I wanted to quit, to just walk away from the grime and the exhaustion, but a powerful inner voice kept me going. I didn’t want to be labeled a loser or a failure; more importantly, I really wanted to prove to the world, and especially to myself, that a woman could not only survive but also excel in this demanding industry.
When I finally made the decision to open my own company, my then-boss reacted with complete disbelief, telling me I was crazy. He questioned who would ever buy roofing services from a woman, underscoring the deep-seated skepticism I faced. But I looked him in the eye and told him that I had to try, because if I didn’t pursue this dream, I would be miserable for the rest of my life. That conviction fueled me. It took weeks to get my very first call, those initial days filled with anxiety and uncertainty, but by the end of that first year, I was proudly serving 15 clients. It was a grueling start, but every challenge only solidified my resolve to build Golden Group Roofing into the success it is today.
Q: What are some of your more memorable projects or client experiences that truly stand out?

A: One project that will forever be etched in my memory involved a wonderful client who absolutely adored Cape Cod. Her dream was to bring the serene, coastal charm of Cape Cod to her home right in the heart of the city. Her entire interior design was beach-themed, filled with ocean-inspired décor, making the only missing element the actual beach itself! However, the exterior of her house was clad in a very standard, traditional white vinyl siding, which felt completely out of place with her vision. She specifically wanted the natural, rustic look of cedar shake siding, but unfortunately, it was beyond her budget, both in terms of initial cost and long-term maintenance. Other contractors she spoke to simply wanted to replace her existing siding with the exact same traditional vinyl, offering no creative alternatives.
But at Golden Group Roofing, our philosophy is different; we were like, “No, we have options here! Let’s think outside the box.” When I showed her samples of Beach House Shake composite shingles in a beautiful, natural cedar color, her reaction was incredibly moving. She was so overwhelmed with happiness that she burst into tears. It was a profound moment for both of us. She was the sweetest woman, and her passion for her home’s aesthetic was truly inspiring. I was genuinely happy to be part of bringing that piece of Cape Cod to her home, transforming her house into a true reflection of her dreams. It was about being more than just another contractor; it was about understanding her vision and finding an innovative, affordable solution to make it a reality. Experiences like that, where we connect with clients on such a personal level and find unique products to offer, have not only been deeply rewarding but have also played a crucial role in successfully launching our business into the siding industry. It’s a testament to how listening to client needs and offering creative solutions can drive significant growth and satisfaction.
Q: What emerging trends are you currently observing and embracing within the roofing and siding industry?
A: I’m witnessing tremendous and exciting changes, largely driven by the pervasive use of technology across almost every aspect of our operations. From sophisticated eagle views and 3D animation that help clients visualize their projects, to advanced customer relationship management systems, technology is enhancing the entire buyer experience. We can now digitally bring a prospective roof into a homeowner’s living room, allowing them to see what it will look like before a single shingle is laid. This completely transforms the consultation process, making it far more interactive and engaging than the days when I used to build miniature roof displays. Furthermore, science and engineering are revolutionizing so many products. We’re seeing incredible advancements, from algae-resistant siding that maintains its pristine appearance for longer, to highly efficient solar shingles that seamlessly integrate into the roof system, providing both protection and renewable energy. These innovations are not just incremental; they’re truly groundbreaking.
At Golden Group Roofing, we’ve also proudly become one of the first companies to specialize in solar-ready roofs. This involves integrating solar panels much like you would a skylight, ensuring a flush, aesthetic, and highly functional installation that is prepared for future energy needs. I strongly believe that over the next 10 years, we’re going to see a significant shift, with many more roofers adopting this approach. It just makes immense practical and environmental sense, aligning with the growing demand for sustainable and energy-efficient home solutions.
Q: Do you have any specific advice for fellow roofing and siding contractors looking to stay competitive and innovative?
A: My strongest advice to fellow contractors is to truly embrace creativity and step beyond the conventional. There’s an incredible wealth of innovation happening in exterior building products, yet many contractors still default to offering only the most traditional and readily available options. I’d love to see more contractors getting creative with their projects, encouraging homeowners to explore the vast possibilities when it comes to siding texture, style, and new materials. We have access to such diverse and high-quality products today – from advanced composites that mimic natural wood to innovative, durable siding options in a spectrum of colors and finishes. If we just slow our roll a bit, take the time to educate homeowners on the full range of options we have access to, rather than simply what’s currently in stock or easiest to install, we can make a truly significant difference in their satisfaction and the aesthetic appeal of their homes. Leading with that mindset – that we are here to fulfill their exterior dreams with the best solutions available – will undoubtedly result in a much larger base of satisfied, enthusiastic customers. Furthermore, our manufacturers are working around the clock, investing heavily in research and development to produce so many incredible product lines. It’s simply not fair for us, as contractors, to continue showing only the traditional ways that things have always been done. I believe it’s time now to truly showcase all the bells and whistles, all the cutting-edge options, and empower our customers to make their exterior dreams a stunning reality.
Q: For young people considering a career in the trades, particularly construction, what advice would you offer?
A: I always tell young people that construction isn’t for everyone. It’s a demanding industry, requiring resilience, problem-solving skills, and often physical stamina. However, for those who find a passion for it, they tend to stay in the trades forever because it offers unparalleled opportunities and a deep sense of accomplishment. If you’re comfortable with the pressure of fast-moving projects, critical deadlines, and a dynamic work environment where every day brings new challenges, then this industry could be an incredibly rewarding fit for you. My best practical advice is to find someone you admire, perhaps a leader or innovator in the trades, someone whose journey you enjoy following on LinkedIn or other social media platforms. Don’t hesitate to reach out to them. See if you can join their team, even as a summer intern. Gaining hands-on experience and mentorship early on can be invaluable.
This industry truly contains a “gazillion amount of money” – meaning there are immense financial opportunities and consistent demand. We will always need houses, buildings, and infrastructure, so the need for skilled tradespeople is never going to diminish. The construction industry will welcome you with open arms, just as it welcomed me, regardless of your background. Whether you are male, female, an immigrant, or from any minority group, there is a place for you to learn, grow, and build a successful, stable, and highly rewarding career. It’s a field where hard work and dedication directly translate into tangible success and personal fulfillment.
Q: How has Golden Group Roofing retained employees in the post-Covid landscape, particularly with evolving workplace expectations?

A: The post-Covid era presented unique challenges for employee retention, as many people re-evaluated their priorities and expectations for work. We observed that a significant number of individuals were hesitant to return to traditional office environments, so we knew we had to innovate our approach to attract and retain top talent. Our solution was to completely redesign our offices, transforming them into a collaborative, comfortable, and engaging space that feels more like a modern cafe than a corporate setting. We incorporated plush couches for relaxed brainstorming, a high-top island sitting area that encourages impromptu discussions, and even a pool table for a much-needed break and team bonding. My business partner, Freddy, and I took a significant step by getting rid of our private offices entirely. We now sit at a huge conference table with our team, which sends a clear message: we lead with them, not from behind closed doors or separate spaces. This open and accessible approach, we believe, represents the future of leadership.
In today’s professional landscape, nobody truly cares about your fancy title or the size of your private office. What people genuinely desire is connection, appreciation, and to feel valued. They want you to eat lunch with them, engage in meaningful conversations, and recognize their contributions. Employees today have numerous options to take their talents elsewhere, so it is our job, as leaders, to make it unequivocally known that we appreciate them, we value their opinions, and we are committed to their well-being and growth. And so far, they absolutely love it. The vibrant atmosphere and collaborative spirit have significantly boosted morale and retention. Although, I must admit, they play too much pool. I probably should’ve never added the pool table, but it’s a small price to pay for a happy and engaged team!
Q: Beyond skilled labor, what are some of your pro-specific tools and technologies that are indispensable to Golden Group Roofing’s success?
A: Beyond the fundamental tools of the trade, several key technologies and specific products have become absolutely indispensable to our operations and overall success at Golden Group Roofing. First and foremost is Hover, an incredible app we utilize every single day. It allows us to give homeowners the unique opportunity to play around with different roofing and siding options, visualizing what their home could look like with various styles and colors before making a commitment. Hand-in-hand with Hover is our DJI drone. Drones have revolutionized our sales process, completely eliminating the need for our sales team to climb ladders for initial inspections, significantly enhancing their safety and efficiency while providing unparalleled aerial views and precise measurements. Then, there’s Beach House Shake authentic composite shingle – this product was a game-changer for us, allowing us to offer premium, durable siding solutions that look exactly like real cedar shake but without the maintenance, and it single-handedly elevated us into the siding business. Of course, we also rely on high-quality, professional-grade equipment like Tapco breaks for precision bending of aluminum and all our reliable Hitachi nail guns for efficient and accurate installation.
But more importantly, let’s talk about the foundational technology that truly runs our company: CRM, or customer relationship management software. We specifically use Leap Job Progress, and it has absolutely revolutionized the way we manage the entire customer journey, from initial contact to project completion, ensuring a seamless experience and, most importantly, making sure we never drop the ball on any client. I’m incredibly passionate about this software; it’s our central nervous system, and we use it daily across every department in the office. Furthermore, while it might not be a traditional construction tool, the Verizon tracking app, Reveal, has also been an undeniable game-changer for our operational efficiency and safety. It allows us to accurately track our drivers’ routes, monitor driving habits for safety, and identify how much driving time is being spent on unnecessary tasks. I’m deeply passionate about strengthening our operations whenever possible, with a strong focus on safety and maximum efficiency. This app has been instrumental in helping us become a more profitable company, which in turn allows us to reflect those profits back to our dedicated employees through enhanced quality of life, better benefits, and a stronger, more rewarding work environment.
