Introduced in 2022, Jude is the newest sofa design in the British Design Shop collection. I recently had the pleasure of styling and photographing this piece as part of my ongoing collaboration with the brand. My aim was to present an alternative to the ubiquitous grey, beige and cream palettes that have dominated interiors in recent years, so I selected a beautifully textured weave from Romo Fabrics in the Serandite colourway.
Choosing a warmer, more distinctive hue took me out of my usual comfort zone, but the result was worth it. The Serandite fabric has a soft, warm undertone and a woven texture that creates visual depth and subtle variation across the surface. This multi-dimensional finish avoids looking flat and adds richness to the overall scheme. It pairs especially well with earthy neutrals and handcrafted ceramics, creating a calm, sophisticated setting. If you prefer bolder contrasts, Jude also works with complementary accents—think scatter cushions in deeper blues or warm golds to enhance the sofa’s presence.
Design-wise, Jude blends square and circular elements to create a generously proportioned, curvaceous silhouette. The combination of clean lines and soft curves gives it a confident, contemporary character while maintaining a welcoming feel. It is offered as a single three-seater, as the sectional configuration shown in some of the brand’s displays, and there is also a loveseat option for smaller spaces. As with all British Design Shop pieces, Jude is made to order in the UK, where designers and skilled craftsmen collaborate closely to ensure a high level of finish and longevity.
One of Jude’s strengths is its versatility. The sofa has strong visual presence but is flexible in how it can be styled. Standard back cushions are supplied to deliver comfort and support for everyday use. If you prefer a cleaner, more minimalist look, you can replace or complement the back cushions with bolsters or a selection of scatter cushions, changing the feel of the piece according to your mood or the formality of the room. The simple modularity of the design makes it easy to refresh the look over time without changing the sofa itself.
The tactile quality of the Romo weave invites close inspection: the texture reads differently depending on light and viewing angle, which helps Jude sit comfortably within a range of interior styles from modern to more eclectic, layered schemes. For those who are cautious about colour, this fabric offers an approachable step away from neutral greys and creams—introducing personality without overwhelming the room. For more adventurous decorators, Jude acts as a refined backdrop for bolder colour accents and mixed-material styling.
