Photographers Sophie Odelberg and her fiancé Gustav wanted a home that honored their deep connection to the outdoors and supported an active, nature-centered life. The result is a refined retreat that feels both timeless and intimately tied to its landscape.
The kitchen, custom-made by Nordiska Kök, serves as the cabin’s heart. Built from warm-hued oak, cabinetry features solid, rounded handles and carefully considered joinery that balance rustic character with contemporary refinement. The material palette—oiled wood, textured stone and pale pine wall panelling—echoes the surrounding forest and mountains, creating a cohesive interior that feels rooted in place.
A standout feature is the built-in cabinet with ribbed glass, which catches and diffuses light to lend the space an open, airy feel without sacrificing privacy. Clever details—a recessed shelf that doubles as a service hatch, integrated storage nooks, and unobtrusive hardware—demonstrate an attention to practical living and timeless aesthetics. Sustainable materials and local craftsmanship were guiding principles throughout the project, reflecting Sophie and Gustav’s commitment to environmentally conscious design.
Sophie explains their vision: “We wanted to reinterpret the barn-house tradition in a way that feels contemporary and true to our lifestyle. Nature is central to how we live, so the house needed to reflect that—simple, durable and honest in its materials.” That philosophy informs every room, from the generous kitchen workspace to the calm, light-filled living areas that frame views of snow-dusted trees and open sky.
Note Design Studio led the architectural design, and Swedish heart pine was selected for much of the interior structure and finishes. The timber’s warm grain and tactile quality contribute to the cabin’s sense of refuge, while large glazed openings connect interiors to the panoramic mountain scenery. The overall effect is a calm, welcoming retreat that prioritises comfort and durability without sacrificing refined detail.
