There are many risks tied to driving. Even the most careful drivers in well-maintained vehicles can encounter unexpected problems. A recent report highlighted an alarming trend: sunroofs appear to be shattering at an unusually high rate in 2026. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) logged 550 reports of broken sunroofs in 2025 and has already received nearly 500 reports so far this year.
These incidents raise two key questions: what is causing these sunroofs to shatter, and are they truly “exploding,” or is that simply sensational language online? Below is a clear look at what is known so far, why investigators are puzzled, and what the numbers suggest.
Why Sunroofs are Shattering
Some drivers have described the sudden failures in dramatic terms. One Louisiana driver told reporters, “I’m not even joking, it sounded like a gunshot,” after her sunroof shattered without warning while she was driving. Fortunately in that case, the sunshade was closed and glass did not enter the cabin. Accounts like this have continued to be reported to the NHTSA throughout the year.
Investigators find the pattern frustrating because there is no singular, clear cause. Over the past three years, reported sunroof defects have involved more than 200 distinct vehicle models from 17 different manufacturers. That diversity suggests the problem is not isolated to a single brand, supplier, or production run.
High-profile legal cases have underscored the complexity. A lawsuit alleging defects in Mercedes-Benz panoramic sunroofs described sudden, loud shattering events that startled drivers and sent glass fragments into the vehicle. That case was dismissed in July after the plaintiffs could not provide sufficient evidence tying the breakages to a manufacturing defect. Similarly, a long-running NHTSA investigation into sunroof complaints for another manufacturer did not yield a definitive, broadly applicable manufacturing fault.
Rather than a single production flaw, the NHTSA and other experts point to physical damage accumulated over time as a plausible explanation. Tempered glass is strong, but it is also vulnerable to small impacts. Tiny chips or micro-cracks caused by road debris, rocks, or other strikes can be difficult to see but can grow over time. Under normal driving conditions and typical thermal or mechanical stresses, those small defects can propagate until the glass fails suddenly—often giving the impression of an “explosion” when the tempered panel shatters.
What the Numbers Say
Another straightforward consideration is exposure: sunroofs are far more common than they used to be. Increases in the prevalence and size of panoramic glass roofs mean more vehicles on the road have large glass panels overhead. Industry reporting indicates that roughly 40 percent of new cars and trucks in the U.S. now come with sunroofs, up nearly 10 percentage points since 2011. More vehicles with larger glass roofs naturally increases the absolute number of potential failures, even if the relative risk per vehicle remains low.
That combination—more sunroofs on the road and larger glass panels integrated into vehicle designs—may help explain why reports of shattering sunroofs are more visible now than in past years. It does not resolve every unanswered question, but it frames the issue in terms of both mechanical vulnerability and wider adoption of the feature.
For vehicle owners, this information points to practical steps: inspect sunroof glass periodically for small chips or cracks, and address any damage early. While many of the reported shattering events have been sudden and startling, preexisting damage from road debris is a plausible and actionable risk factor.
