The insidious nature of VOCs lies in their ability to subtly compromise our well-being over time, often without immediate awareness of their source.

The impact of indoor air quality on cognitive function is a growing area of research. A significant study conducted by researchers from Harvard and Syracuse Universities highlighted this link dramatically. Their findings showed that individuals working in buildings with low VOC levels scored an impressive 61 percent higher on cognitive function tests compared to those in buildings with typical air quality. This research provides compelling evidence that reducing VOC exposure not only protects physical health but also enhances mental clarity and productivity.

Furthermore, consumer preferences have played a considerable role. “Also, over the last couple of decades, scented products like candles, room sprays, and even garbage bags have become extremely popular, especially in Westernized countries like the U.S., which has contributed to the prevalence of VOCs,” Birkenes adds. These products often rely on complex chemical formulations that actively release VOCs to create and disperse their desired fragrances, turning what many perceive as pleasant aromas into potential sources of indoor air pollution.

Adding to the challenge is the current regulatory landscape. While the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has successfully banned certain extremely toxic chemicals, such as methylene chloride, its authority to regulate VOCs in a broad range of indoor products is limited. Many common household items can off-gas VOCs for hours, months, or even years, yet remain largely unregulated for their indoor emissions. This regulatory gap places a greater responsibility on consumers and manufacturers to choose and produce safer alternatives. Fortunately, despite these challenges, there are numerous practical and effective strategies individuals can employ to minimize their exposure to VOCs and improve their indoor air quality.

Common Household Items That Can Off-Gas VOCs

Virtually any interior finish or product not made from naturally inert materials like glass, solid metal, ceramic, concrete, or stone has the potential to off-gas VOCs. The good news is that for many of these categories, there are now alternative products available that are specifically formulated with low or no-VOC content. Paint

Solvent-based paints historically contain much higher levels of VOCs than their water-based counterparts. To significantly minimize dangers, always opt for certified low or no-VOC paints. Carpets and rugs, particularly those newly installed, can be significant contributors to VOCs. “Most VOCs from carpets come from the backing and the adhesive to glue it in place,” explains Docia Boylen, owner of Handyman Connection of Golden, Colorado. She adds, “The backing can also be treated with an antimicrobial agent that can increase VOC pollution.” To select carpets with lower VOC emissions, look for the Green Label or Green Label Plus certification for both the carpets themselves and any adhesives used. After installation, it’s wise to air out the space for at least 72 hours, ideally longer, to allow initial off-gassing to dissipate. Boylen also suggests, “A woolen carpet with a natural-fiber backing is also a great choice, since wool is naturally flame and stain resistant,” offering a more natural and often lower-VOC alternative.

Insulation

The insulation materials within your walls and attics can also be a source of VOCs. Common types of building insulation include fiberglass, polyurethane, and polystyrene, which are often treated with various chemicals, including flame retardants. “These products can leak VOCs into your air, especially during excessive heat,” warns Boylen. To minimize this risk, she recommends opting for formaldehyde-free insulation brands. Alternative choices like mineral wool insulation or specific sprayed foam products, when properly chosen and installed, can also offer lower VOC options for a healthier home envelope.

Furniture

Many pieces of furniture, especially those made from composite wood products like particleboard, MDF (medium-density fiberboard), and plywood, contain resins and adhesives that can release formaldehyde and other VOCs. The foam found in mattresses, sofa cushions, and padding can also be a source. “Like other products, VOC emissions are highest when the products are new and slowly drop off over time,” Hwang notes. However, she cautions, “off-gassing may continue for years.” To make safer furniture choices, look for items that have been VOC tested by the California Department of Public Health (which sets rigorous standards) or certified by reputable organizations like SCS Indoor Advantage or GreenGuard. Alternatively, Hwang suggests, “Or buy secondhand furniture that has had more time to off-gas,” allowing much of the initial VOC load to have dissipated before it enters your home.

Cleaning Products

Many conventional cleaners use harsh chemicals and strong fragrances, which are often complex mixtures of VOCs. To reduce this exposure, prioritize fragrance-free products whenever possible. These include items such as dry-cleaned clothing (which can retain chemical residues), hair spray, perfumes and colognes, hobby and craft supplies (especially glues, paints, and solvents), aerosol sprays of all kinds, and pest repellents. “Despite their hazards, many manufacturers still use VOCs because of their desired properties in products,” Hwang explains. She highlights a particularly ironic example: “Many fragrances and plug-in air fresheners even intentionally contain VOCs that off-gas at a certain rate so that the desired scent lingers in the air.” This means that products marketed to ‘freshen’ your air are often actively polluting it with the very compounds you should be avoiding.

The good news is that addressing high VOC levels in your home is not an insurmountable task. “The good news is that dealing with high VOC levels is quite straightforward and achievable for most people,” affirms Oyvind Birkenes. A combination of awareness, smart product choices, and simple ventilation strategies can significantly improve your indoor air quality. Here’s how you can proactively reduce VOC exposure:

  • Ventilate Regularly: This is arguably the most effective and simplest step. “Open your windows regularly to infuse fresh air into your living room,” recommends Birkenes. Adding enhanced ventilation alone was shown to raise cognitive scores by an astonishing 101 percent, underscoring its profound benefits. Incorporate routine ventilation, especially after cleaning, cooking, or bringing new items into the house.

If you must store such products, ensure they are kept in a well-ventilated area separate from your main living space, such as a detached garage or outdoor shed, away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.
  • Read Product Labels Diligently: Make it a habit to read and follow the guidelines and warnings on product labels. This can provide crucial information about ventilation requirements, proper usage, and potential hazards.

However, with increased education, consistent monitoring, and proactive intervention through informed choices and simple habits, their impact on our health and homes can be successfully mitigated, leading to a much healthier living environment.
