Avoid Amazon Knockoffs with This New Browser Extension

As any experienced online shopper knows, digital marketplaces are full of imitation products. If you don’t scrutinize listings carefully, you can easily buy a lower-quality knockoff instead of the brand-name item you intended to purchase. While returns are possible, avoiding knockoffs in the first place is far more convenient and saves time and frustration.

Enter Josh Pigford (known as @Shpigford on X). In a recent post he introduced a new Chrome browser extension called Knockoff that makes it easier to spot and filter out suspicious brands on Amazon. The extension aims to simplify product browsing by removing or clearly marking listings that appear to be counterfeit, misleading, or otherwise dubious.

What Is Knockoff?

Knockoff is a browser extension for Google Chrome designed to reduce exposure to counterfeit and low-quality listings on Amazon. Once installed, it provides filtering controls that let you remove or label many of the obscure, all-caps, or pseudo-brand names that often populate search results. According to the extension’s description in the Chrome store, Knockoff “detects those listings and hides, dims, or labels them, right in the search results,” with filter behavior determined by the settings you choose. At launch the extension supports english-language Amazon marketplaces including amazon.com, amazon.ca, amazon.co.uk, and amazon.com.au.

How Can I Use This?

After installing Knockoff in Chrome, you can choose between multiple filter levels to match your tolerance for risk and how rigorous you want the filtering to be. The three main modes are:

  • Relaxed: Hides known pseudo-brands and any brands on your personal blocklist. This mode reduces obvious low-quality listings while keeping a broad selection visible.
  • Standard (default): In addition to the relaxed settings, this mode hides suspect-looking names and unbranded listings. It offers a balanced approach for most shoppers who want fewer distractions and potential knockoffs.
  • Strict: An allowlist-only mode. Anything that is not a recognized, established brand is filtered out. Use this setting if you want to see primarily known manufacturers and vetted listings.

You also control how filtered items appear visually. Options include:

  • Hidden: Listings are removed from view but a floating counter shows how many are hidden, with a one-click reveal if you want to inspect them.
  • Dimmed: Filtered listings remain in the results but are visually muted and restored when you hover over them.
  • Labeled: Filtered items are left fully visible but clearly marked with a label indicating they have been flagged by the extension.

These visual options let you tailor the extension to your browsing style, whether you prefer a pristine results page or like to see everything with clearer indicators of potential issues.

Are There Privacy Concerns?

Privacy is a common concern with browser add-ons, and the developer has addressed this directly. The extension description states that all processing happens locally in your browser, with no accounts, no tracking, and no analytics collection. The only network activity is a daily download of the brand list and an optional, one-click misclassification report you can submit if you find an error. Those reports include only basic details such as brand name, verdict, ASIN, and marketplace; they do not include personal data.

Because Knockoff performs its checks on your device and minimizes network communications, it fits well for shoppers who want a privacy-respecting tool to cut down on knockoff listings.

With adjustable filter strength, clear visual options, and a privacy-conscious design, it is a practical tool for anyone who shops online frequently and wants a cleaner, more trustworthy set of search results.
