Smart home devices often don’t appear risky, largely because they don’t resemble traditional computers. However, that’s precisely what they are. Underneath the surface, a smart bulb or doorbell operates on software and maintains a direct connection to your home network.

I wasn’t actively searching for this data; it was simply there, stored and accessible.
Much of this data isn’t stored locally. It ends up on remote servers, often without explicit consent or awareness. No specific incident had to occur for me to feel uneasy about this practice. I simply didn’t like the idea of my daily life being recorded and stored in this manner.
I haven’t taken the extreme step of removing all my “smart” devices. However, I now approach the addition of new devices with greater caution, carefully considering whether the added features and convenience truly outweigh the potential risks to my privacy and security. If the answer is no, I refrain from purchasing the device.
