However, the true catalyst for my deep dive into DIY came with the exciting, yet financially challenging, milestone of purchasing my own home. It quickly became clear that my budget was, to put it mildly, restrictive. The vision I held for my dream home, filled with custom touches and functional beauty, seemed unattainable through traditional means. It was at this juncture that I realized if I wanted to bring those visions to life without breaking the bank, I had to master the art of doing it myself. This realization wasn’t just about saving money; it was about the profound satisfaction of crafting something precisely to my specifications, transforming a simple concept into a tangible reality within my own four walls.”
Carissa (@houseonravine): “The year 2021 brought with it a lingering sense of cabin fever, a restlessness born from the prolonged periods of staying at home during COVID. I found myself increasingly antsy, looking for an outlet for my pent-up energy. For years, I had harbored a quiet disdain for the drab green marble slabs that adorned our fireplace surround, knowing full well they were far from original to our home. Until then, our home improvement efforts hadn’t extended beyond a fresh coat of paint. But one fateful day, while my spouse, Larry, was out, a bold idea struck. I grabbed a sledgehammer and, with a surge of impulsiveness, began to whack at the marble, determined to uncover whatever lay beneath. My rationale was simple: once I started, we’d have no choice but to fix it. This audacious act, much to Larry’s recurring dismay, marked the exhilarating beginning of our comprehensive DIY journey.
What we discovered beneath the marble was indeed the original brick and tile, but it was in a state of considerable disrepair, and the unearthed tile potentially contained asbestos. This discovery presented a whole new set of challenges, forcing us to rapidly acquire new skills to safely and effectively address the renovation. In retrospect, everything unfolded precisely according to my ‘plan’ of creating a problem to force a solution. This ‘strategy of no return’ remains a favored tactic of mine to this very day, often to Larry’s amusement and occasional exasperation!”
Dustin and Chi (@_scarletoakhomes): “Our entry into the world of DIY was quite abrupt and certainly memorable, dating back to late 2014 when we were actively searching for our very first home. At just 21 years old, we made what many would consider a rather audacious decision: to purchase a fixer-upper with the ambitious goal of flipping it. At the time, I was juggling my engineering studies, and Chi was deeply immersed in nursing school. What I initially envisioned as a relatively straightforward renovation quickly morphed into a colossal undertaking, a house that literally demanded attention and work in every single corner.
Our financial resources were limited, but our time and determination were abundant. This imbalance squarely pushed us into the realm of DIY. We recognized that to accomplish our vision within our means, we had to learn and execute as much of the work ourselves as possible. Our initiation into DIY was anything but gentle or peaceful; it was a baptism by fire. However, the sheer intensity of that first project forced us to learn an incredible amount at a rapid pace. This intense period not only built our skills but also unexpectedly cultivated a deep and lasting love for all aspects of construction and home transformation. That challenging start truly laid the foundation for everything we do today.”

This level of intimate engagement and pride is simply not present when you outsource a project.
However, if I had to pinpoint the very best part, it would undoubtedly be the rich tapestry of stories and cherished memories that become intrinsically linked to each project we undertake. These aren’t just completed tasks; they are chapters in our family’s story, moments of shared effort and unexpected triumphs that stay with us forever. My deepest hope is that these experiences and the resulting tales will become treasured memories for our children as well, fostering their own connection to the spaces we’ve painstakingly created.”
Steve: “The idea phase is unequivocally my favorite. There’s an unparalleled thrill in taking a raw concept, a fleeting thought, and embarking on the challenging but rewarding journey of figuring out, ‘How exactly will this manifest in my specific space?’ It’s akin to solving a complex, three-dimensional puzzle, where each piece is a step in translating abstract thoughts into concrete reality. This initial conceptualization, the brainstorming, and the problem-solving required to bridge the gap between imagination and execution are what truly ignite my passion for DIY. It’s the ultimate creative challenge.”
Dustin and Chi: “It’s genuinely difficult for us to pick a single favorite aspect; collectively, we find immense joy and satisfaction in the entirety of the DIY process. We particularly love the initial stage of walking into a space – be it an entire house or a specific project – and instantly conjuring or refining an idea, a clear vision of what it can become. For me, Dustin, the actual ‘doing’ is incredibly fulfilling. There’s a deep satisfaction that comes from working with my hands, from manipulating materials and seeing progress unfold directly before me.
I also thrive on the continuous learning curve and the challenges that invariably arise. I firmly believe that learning should be a lifelong endeavor; there’s always more knowledge to acquire, more techniques to master. And, of course, the culmination of all that effort, the completion of a project, brings its own profound sense of pride. Getting to step back, admire the finished work, enjoy its new functionality, and simply be proud of what we’ve accomplished together is an incomparable reward.”

We often fantasize about the possibility of buying that house back one day. It would be an incredible, almost surreal experience to walk through it again, seeing everything we did, perhaps having a good laugh at how much of amateurs we truly were back then, and then tackling the entire renovation once more.
Re-doing that house with the wealth of experience and expertise we now possess would be a truly crazy and deeply satisfying endeavor. With our current understanding, we would be able to execute every aspect with greater precision, incorporating even better functionality, superior craftsmanship, and a more refined sense of style. It would be a complete transformation, a full circle moment reflecting our growth as DIY professionals.”
Steve: “I would absolutely jump at the chance to take another crack at the playhouse I built for my daughter. That project was a significant learning experience, and I’ve acquired so many new techniques and design ideas since then. I know now I could infuse it with some truly unique and innovative features, making it even more magical and personalized. Plus, my daughter has already started hinting for a new one, so it’s definitely a strong contender for a future build. I can easily envision myself getting carried away with creative possibilities, and that project would undoubtedly require a massive budget to realize all the grand ideas I’d have!”
Carissa: “Our primary bathroom renovation holds the distinction of being the first ‘big’ project we ever completed, and it was an intensive crash course in DIY. Looking back, there’s an immense amount that we learned during that process that I desperately wish we could go back in time and apply now. While the bathroom doesn’t look bad by any means, the tiling – especially the floor tile – could undoubtedly appear significantly more professional and polished if only we had known then what we know now. For instance, the critical importance of using self-leveling cement for a perfectly even subfloor before tiling was a hard-won lesson!
Another major realization came later: we spent weeks meticulously chiseling tiles off the wall individually, utterly unaware that we could have saved ourselves an immense amount of time and effort by simply tearing the walls down to the studs. The internet, in its infinite wisdom and humor, certainly had a field day commenting on that particular misstep in our journey. It was a humbling, but ultimately invaluable, lesson in demolition efficiency.”

Through the continuous process of tackling countless projects, I’ve cultivated an unwavering confidence that no matter what unforeseen problem or obstacle presents itself, I possess the innate ability to analyze it and devise a solution. This fundamental shift in perspective has had a transformative impact, not just on how I approach and execute my DIY projects, but also on how I navigate the myriad ‘joys’ of homeownership – which, as many can attest, often translates to dealing with everything randomly breaking! It’s the belief in my own problem-solving capacity that has truly empowered me.”
Dustin and Chi: “Virtually all of our skills were initially acquired through the demands of a specific DIY project, then subsequently refined and improved over time with consistent practice. If I had to pick a favorite, I’d say it’s general carpentry, encompassing everything from foundational rough framing to the meticulous details of finer finish work. As our viewers often see in our videos, we have a particular enjoyment for building robust decks, which heavily involves rough framing techniques. However, I also derive immense satisfaction from more intricate finish wood projects, such as the custom entry roofs we craft. For these, we fabricate all the individual wood pieces from scratch, showcasing a blend of precision and artistry. It’s the breadth and depth of carpentry that truly excites us.”
Carissa: “When we embarked on the renovation of the fireplace at our old house, an unexpected turn of events led us to list the house for sale just a week after starting the project. This sudden deadline presented us with an urgent imperative: we had no choice but to quickly master the skill of laying bricks. It was a high-pressure, learn-as-you-go situation that pushed us to acquire a new skill at an accelerated pace. Fast forward to a recent project in our new (old) 1913 home, where we were redoing the hearth and surround. We unfortunately made an error in laying the mortar bed. Faced with the rapidly hardening mortar, we had to quickly rent a demolition hammer and learn how to use it on the fly to rip out our mistake before it became permanent. There’s truly nothing quite like the experience of learning how to operate a jackhammer in the middle of your own living room – it certainly makes for a memorable DIY tale!”
Navigating the Uncharted: What Still Poses a Challenge or Intimidation for Our Creators

Steve: “Heavy-duty electrical work remains an area where I maintain a healthy level of respect and caution. Anything that involves opening up the main breaker box or dealing with high-voltage systems still makes me slow down significantly and meticulously respect every single step of the process. I definitely do not want to risk blowing up my house; I have a sneaking suspicion my wife might be just a little bit upset with me if that were to happen! It’s a crucial reminder that while confidence is key, knowing when to exercise extreme caution or even call in a licensed professional is paramount for safety and peace of mind.”
Carissa: “Over time, Larry and I have developed a pretty strong sense of our DIY limits. While we are always eager to push ourselves and expand our skill set, we draw a firm line when it comes to significant structural work. We have absolutely no intention of haphazardly taking down load-bearing walls and inadvertently causing the house to, well, fall down. For any projects involving major structural alterations or concerns about foundational integrity, our first and non-negotiable step is always to seek a professional opinion from an engineer or a qualified contractor. Safety and the long-term stability of our home are always our top priorities.”
Dustin and Chi: “I wouldn’t necessarily categorize certain tasks as ‘intimidating,’ but rather as ‘irritating’ or excessively ‘tedious.’ As a prime example, I would much rather hire out drywall work for larger projects. While I am fully capable of doing drywall, and I can ensure it looks absolutely perfect, the reality is that it would probably take me twenty times longer than a professional crew. They do it day in and day out, so their efficiency and speed are unmatched.
For small repairs or patch jobs, I’ll tackle drywall myself without hesitation. But for comprehensive room renovations or entire house projects, I find that the crazy amount of time it would consume me simply isn’t worth it compared to the cost of paying for professional services. I would put roofing and large-scale painting projects in the same category for me. They’re certainly not intimidating, and they’re definitely doable, but we only have a finite amount of time in life, and I refuse to spend a significant portion of it being the slowest drywaller of my generation!”

Steve: “I’m genuinely captivated by the possibilities of 3D printing and the artistic potential of epoxy builds. 3D printing offers such incredible practicality for crafting custom jigs that can streamline future projects, or even just for creating unique, personalized toys for the kids. Epoxy, on the other hand, occupies a really unique and creatively driven niche, allowing for stunning aesthetic effects and durable finishes. Both of these disciplines offer an exciting level of customization and creative freedom that I find incredibly appealing. I’m eager to delve into their intricacies and see how they can further enhance my future projects.”
Carissa: “Our attic space is quite large and currently completely unfinished, presenting a significant opportunity for future expansion. We are hoping, one day, to learn the comprehensive skills required to properly insulate and hang drywall in that vast area. This particular project is a substantial undertaking, and it’s currently awaiting the perfect alignment of three crucial factors: the right mix of courage to tackle such a large-scale renovation, the necessary financial resources, and, perhaps most elusive of all, a generous amount of free time. It’s a long-term goal that promises to add significant usable space to our home.”
Dustin and Chi: “At this point in our DIY journey, I feel like I’ve either attempted or successfully completed nearly every type of project at least once. Therefore, it’s easier for me to identify specific projects I’d like to try that would inherently require acquiring new skills and knowledge. One such project would be designing and building a fancy, custom greenhouse. That would be an incredibly fun and challenging learning experience, and it would bring immense joy to Chi, allowing her to nurture her beloved plants through the winter months without having to bring all ’10 million’ of them inside the house! Another project that would be awesome to tackle, combining practicality with craftsmanship, would be constructing a high-quality chicken coop, building it from the ground up to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing.”

They saw the enormity of the challenge and doubted our youthful ambition.
I’m immensely proud of it because despite our genuine fear and inexperience, we were driven by an unyielding determination. Without that foundational, incredibly challenging project, we simply wouldn’t be where we are today. That single flip was genuinely life-changing; it didn’t just teach us practical skills, but it helped us discover our true passion for renovation and creation. It set us on the path that has defined our professional and personal lives ever since.”
Steve: “It might sound a little funny or even trivial, but the DIY project I’m most proud of is the wine rack I made for my now-wife – a piece that, ironically, no one else will ever see. What makes it so significant for me is that when I embarked on that project, I had absolutely zero experience with woodworking and possessed almost no tools to speak of. Yet, I was determined to make it work, learning as I went, piecing it together with sheer willpower and ingenuity.
Seeing that modest wine rack come out so well, against all odds, was the initial spark. It was the moment that truly got my wheels turning, igniting a belief in my own capabilities and pushing me to confidently take on progressively bigger and more complex projects. It proved to me that limitations in experience or equipment don’t have to be roadblocks to creativity and success.”
Carissa: “One of the DIY projects I am most proud of is the transformation we achieved in our primary bedroom. We took a run-of-the-mill, utilitarian bi-fold door closet and completely reimagined it, converting it into a stunning built-in wardrobe. The design was carefully crafted to look as though it was an original feature of our 1913 home, seamlessly blending with its historic charm.
A key element of this transformation involved repurposing an old wood dresser that we cleverly sourced from Facebook Marketplace. We meticulously framed it into the existing closet space, creating a bespoke, integrated look. The end result is not only dramatically more aesthetically pleasing, but it also represents a far more efficient and functional use of the available space, adding both beauty and practicality to our primary suite.”

I began documenting things on social media primarily as a personal archive – a place where we could visually track the extensive work we’d done and share the inevitable ups and downs (and there were many!) with a broader audience. Over time, it organically evolved into a truly fun and immensely rewarding creative outlet.
I absolutely love sharing our progress through engaging reels, and we equally enjoy sharing – and often making light of – the often-hilarious and very real realities of DIYing as a couple. It’s certainly not for the faint of heart and, I believe, serves as one of the truest tests of a marriage! However, we prioritize keeping our content very authentic and transparent, and I believe that genuine honesty is precisely what resonates deeply with our audience. I find immense joy in sharing laughter and insights with our community while concurrently creating beautifully and functionally designed spaces that faithfully honor the rich history of our home and the unfolding story of our family.”
Steve: “I started noticing a prevalent issue in society: so many people were what I termed ‘house poor,’ feeling trapped by the perceived inability to afford the home of their dreams or the necessary repairs. I wanted to be a voice that demonstrated a different path – to show them that it is absolutely possible to have the home you envision, replete with custom touches and functional beauty, even if you don’t have a massive bank account at your disposal. Beyond the financial aspect, I genuinely enjoy the process of helping people learn new skills in an easy, digestible, and approachable way. It’s not just about saving money; it’s profoundly about understanding the ‘how’ – the practical steps and techniques.
My ultimate goal is to empower people, to instill in them the confidence to realize they are capable of so much more than they initially believe. I emphasize that every project doesn’t have to be executed with professional perfection to be considered a success. The act of simply trying, of taking that initial step, is literally half the battle won. It’s about fostering a mindset of empowerment and practical creativity.”
Dustin and Chi: “It’s quite amusing to reflect on, but we actually weren’t particularly engaged with social media back when we first started our DIY journey. Our focus was elsewhere. Chi, for example, was deeply immersed in grad school, pursuing her career as a nurse practitioner. There were specific semesters where intense clinical rotations restricted her ability to work a paying job.
During the free time she unexpectedly found from her demanding academic schedule – time she wasn’t allowed to use for paid work – she randomly decided to film some of our ongoing projects and post them online. To our surprise, our pages began to generate really interesting conversations, genuine engagement, and even provided learning opportunities for us from our community. From that unexpected beginning, our social media presence just kept building and growing organically, transforming into the vibrant community it is today.”
